Our Approach
Cultivating Literacy’s learning activities are structured, systematic, and sequential to establish early literacy foundations and sustain cultural and social practices in the home.
Lessons created by our reading specialists focus on the building blocks of reading and use playful activities that incorporate puppets, bingo, game boards, and more to make learning fun. We view parents as expert collaborators and practice building with language and literacy practices in the home.

In our nine-week Individualized Literacy Plan, bilingual reading coaches, who work one-on-one with parents to help them engage their child in games, reading exercises, and other activities to strengthen their reading.
Dual-Language Learning
Cultivating Literacy’s dual-language approach starts with the belief that the home language supports family life and language foundations. Our program provides shared stories and curriculum in the family’s preferred language.
Cultivating Literacy helps children see the connections between their heritage language and English by comparing letters, sounds, and word meanings. Families read stories across languages, with characters sharing intersecting identities with the child.
As a result, children enjoy reading more and increase their confidence and comprehension. A culturally sustaining and mindful approach provides the opportunity to nurture familial bonds between the family that center on reading and sharing stories.
Our program supports families whose heritage language includes Spanish and Vietnamese.
Cultivating Literacy’s dual-language approach honors and builds with the family’s home language and culture. As a result, parents feel greater agency as they support their child’s reading confidence.
Dual-language games help children compare letters and sounds in their home language to the sounds in English, helping bridge home and school.
