Individualized Literacy Plans

Cultivating Literacy partners with schools to provide the program to students and their families. Our reading specialists create individualized nine-week literacy plans complete with a reading kit full of games, activities, and books in the child’s heritage language – all based on the child’s strengths and needs.

Cultivating Literacy’s nine-week Individualized Literacy Plan program starts when a reading coach assesses a student’s reading and identifies areas where they need extra help.

These assessments consist of two widely regarded tools:

  • DIBELS ® (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills)

  • Basic Phonics Skills Test (BPST).

Together, these assessments help to create a roadmap of goals to support the child’s reading growth and confidence.

Reading Coaching & Family Collaboration

Cultivating Literacy’s team meets with students and their families to help them learn more about the program and receive their reading kit.

A reading coach guides the parents throughout the nine-week program, providing support through training, collaboration, and connection.

Coaches build relationships with families by learning about their work, life, and school patterns to support holistic student success. They help families understand the school culture, find ways to help their children succeed and connect them to resources to strengthen the connection between school and family.

The bilingual coach honors the family’s heritage language throughout the learning experience. The coaching and activities build on the heritage language to cultivate pride in heritage and sustain family cultural practices.

Implementation & Post-Assessment

The family implements the program at home with the support of their coach and accesses an online portal that pairs with their reading kit to record their child’s progress and take advantage of other online resources.

At the end of the nine weeks, the Cultivating Literacy team reassesses the child’s progress and prepares a final report. This can suggest additional steps to support the student’s progress to support classroom instruction.

Learning is designed to be sequential and systematic, building early literacy foundations through phonics, phonological awareness, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency instruction.
